The Shire of Mt Marshall officially became known as the Sandal Wood Shire in February 2007. Mr Norm Bates, a resident of Bencubbin approached the Shire in 2007 and shared his idea of restoring a sandalwood dray and housing it in the main street of Bencubbin to honour the Sandalwooders as true pioneers of the region.
Shire of Mt Marshall Council has an elected body of seven councillors with specific powers, duties and responsibilities, set out in the Local Government Act. Council is committed to providing open and accountable government that meets the needs of the community and protects and improves the Shire’s assets and resources.
